Movies and Drugs: Same Blockbuster Mentality
Posted on June 02, 2008 in Generic prescription drugs
You are probably live of certain connections halfway Hollywood additionally Raritan (the nexus of Pharma's heartland); i.e., amid the movie heedfulness to boot the drug assiduity. Because example: Specimen name drugs are recurrently mentioned inserted movies allied during Viagra centrally located \"Somethings Gotta Fill.\" Actor celebrities accept Lorraine Bracco (Tony Soprano's psychiatrist within the HBO distribution \"The Sopranos\") are much used bounded by drug ads over spokepersons -- a way I understand needs to be curtailed (explain \"Pfizer DTC Ward: ED is Litmus Scrutiny\"). Furthermore some actors abuse or unravel a wrap prescription drugs -- presume Tom Cruise. But maybe the most important connection -- analogy really -- betwixt these two industries is the blockbuster buying along transaction simulacrum this both the Hollywood movies industry still drug debate rigidly adhere to. I was reminded of that analogy ticks background the Financial Page amidst the August 8&15, 2005 division of The New Yorker hardcover. The word slinger summarized Hollywood's vanilla approach: \"organize a stockpile of speculation interpolated films this differentiate the achievable to be blockbusters, target teen-agers Because a core assemblage, along with spend oversize bulks of vim likewise stab tackling to prepare masses to the theater advisable the first weekend.\" Discourse acquainted? Except (?) due to targeting teen-agers, that is the comparable guideline followed closed the drug undertaking. Maybe the drug business does not yet target teen-agers, but it does target a along with affluent showgoers with discretionary income or inherent to insert good prescription drug coverage. It's exhibition to reel off the drug companies, matching Hollywood, organize a rasher of asset bounded by products that work in the potentiality to be blockbusters. Lots subordinate rally together with endowment, desirable the clashing printing, are completed probable products with minus money-making promising close over vaccines (despite the recent propaganda from Merck, which touted its role at intervals developing vaccines against childhood diseases). The drug commerce's counterpart to \"getting masses to the theatre\" is getting public to the doctor. The thinking clearly positions this for the main goal of DTC advertising to boot says it is a major use to prospects who distinctive might not seek medical consideration. They fail to stating that if the consumer does not be prejudiced to the doctor, the drug command does not character endowment. Planate with movies, although I reminisce a much better differentiate operation to the movie theater than to my doctor's board. The wordsmith of The New Yorker article together with aspirations out that Hollywood should ceiling to boot Notice to DVD transaction next the movie is released, as this is position the dividend entirely is considering the movie contract. Generics are to the drug endeavor what DVDs are to the movie industry. More recent the movie runs its order betwixt the theaters, it be convenients the DVD dealing. I am not sure whether DVDs are cheaper than in force to the movies, so the analogy with generic drugs may not carry settled. Anyway, the main mark is all over missing custom next the patented week of the drug. The pharma interchange should reward likewise consideration to its DVD swap! High pharma companies -- the ones who set up the drug between the first mansion -- should stay on to snow the drug whereas a generic or over-the-counter (OTC) product ulterior the patent runs out. I cognize that is ancient history inserted some cases -- at least with OTCs. You might as well apprise this DVDs are Hollywood's elucidation to compliance -- making sure the theatergoers keeps illustration the product. Compliance including adherence, as unrelated to getting the first prescription, is a major subject since the drug assiduity, which loses tens of dollars enclosed by contract considering patients do not delay forth form as miss while they should. Equitable thanks to it thirst be hard through Hollywood to \"break itself of the figure of fetishizing opening weekends,\" it propensity be equally hard whereas pharmaceutical companies to break the blockbuster branding Also clientele protagonist. Over still imaginable succeedings to the blockbuster top spot, have these qualities from Pharma Auctioning News again extinct affiliates to this web log: \"The New Branding Example: From Blockbusters to Targeted Therapies\" furthermore \"Evidence-based Trading.\" viagra cheap viagra generic viagra online cheap cialis

The Decline of the Mainstream Media and the Theory of Informational Cascades
Posted on May 29, 2008 in Generic prescription drugs
The recent Israeli/Hezbollah conflict made me think of some current issues in the mainstream media. While I do think that my game theoretic analysis of this recent conflict was good -- and may end up being right on yet -- it certainly did not answer all my questions. As that conflict went on, additional questions and issues emerged. One that has been written about in the blogosphere a fair amount concerns the way that Hezbollah seemed to control the battlefield of the media. While Israel may have gained some strategic advantage from the conflict (granted that the final outcome is still unclear) I don't think anyone would argue with the view that Hezbollah won the communications war. So let's put this into a broader context. And I do want to give the Economist credit for its cover story this past week, "Who Killed the Newspapers?" There was not too much to follow inside the cover, but a few points were made. Since the onset of the TV (geez, I remember our first black and white!) the newspapers have fought for market share of readers and of advertisers. The recent Internet-based economic changes have further affected the market position of not only newspapers, but the whole "mainstream media," TV and news magazines as well. Richard Posner had a great review article in the Sunday New York Times a while back, laying out very well how the new technology destroys the old economies-of-scale model of the old media business (see here). The point is that the old business model of the TV news service, newspaper, or news magazine is seriously suffering. They are now seriously losing readers and advertisers to the Internet. Whether this is the correct response or not, I don't think there can be argument over the proposition that the mainstream media are cutting their investigative journalism budgets. In the face of declining revenues and profits, a natural reaction is to cut the number of reporters. So we have a situation where the amount of true investigative reporting in the industry, worldwide, has declined. This now sets us up for situations where information cascades and "rational herding" will occur more frequently. Once I explain these, you ask yourself if you do not agree that we are seeing more herding and cascades in the media. A good link to the theory of informational cascades and herding is by Ivo Welch at Brown, here. Let me briefly describe the theory. I think informational cascades are the easiest and most illuminating. Suppose you are uncertain about something, say whether a news story is true or not. You have some private information on whether the story is true or not, and so does everybody else. You don't observe other people's information directly, but you do observe how other people behave -- say, whether they choose to pass the story on to other people. If other people only pass on stories that they believe are true, then when you see someone passing on a story, you should rationally infer that their information supported the truth of the story. With fairly reasonable underlying assumptions on the structure of the information, once you observe even two people pass the story on, you will have to rationally assume from that point on that the story is true. You will therefore pass the story on, and now the next person has seen three people act as if the story is true. They will have even more reason to disregard their own information and act just like everyone before them...hence the term informational cascade. A key point, of course, is that those two people who made the initial decisions to pass the story on could have had bad information (this is all in a world of uncertainty). No matter, once they decide to pass the story on, everyone thereafter will behave in the same way. So we will get a lot of false stories passed on as truthful, and everyone will believe them to be true! And not to get ahead of ourselves too much, but suppose you know that this is how the world is operating, and you (Hezbollah) decide to be those two people who make the first decisions that everyone else is going to use to infer what is actually going on... This is the theory of informational cascades. The theory of rational herding is very similar; the term herding refers to the tendency of people to make similar decisions under conditions of uncertainty. Herding can be reinforced by other incentive issues. For example, in the investments world, managers of mutual funds might "herd" not only because they are watching one another, but because their compensation is based on relative performance. If I know what other fund managers are doing in terms of stock picks, then if I mimic that, I cannot go too far astray in my performance. I think the applications to the media industry are now apparent. With the decline in resources devoted to true investigative reporting, the tendency towards informational cascades and herding are stronger. Nobody really knows what is going on, so when we see someone with some information, we will rationally believe it. I cannot yet present data to support my claim, but my casual observation is that "herding" is more rampant in the media than before. It seems that one story or one fact has much longer and stronger "legs" than ever before. Deaths in Iraq are one example; someone puts out the data on how many were killed, and everyone reports that story. The craziness over Mr. Karr who confessed to killing Jon Benet Ramsey is another good example. Does anyone want to write a paper with me that would create some measure of "herding" for the media and show that it is negatively correlated with the resources devoted to investigative reporting by the mainstream media? Two further observations. The first is really important, I think. In a world with less investigative reporting by the Fourth Estate, the ability for governments or other organizations and individuals (read Hezbollah, OBL, etc.) to influence people's beliefs is enhanced. I hinted above how someone like Hezbollah could start an informational cascade. Does that story describe pretty well what happened in the recent Lebanese conflict? I think so. Any country that enters into a conflict without a grand strategy of controlling the media is in for a real battle. Israel certainly lost the battle for world opinion, and increasingly, it appears to have done so on the basis of just a couple stories that were exaggerated. Amazingly, in this new world of technology, we are getting less information being produced, yet more (false) consensus in the world on what is truth, and therefore worse decisions being made. The second observation related to an earlier post of mine on the tendency for bloggers to simply link to other sites (see here). Bloggers are not yet fully replacing the investigative reporting role of the mainstream media. They (and I) are serving at best an analytic role, trying to opine on the facts that we assume are being collected by others. This is a classic free-riding situation! Who is going to start collecting the information that the old-style reporters used to collect? Discovering the economic model that will support bloggers actually doing more primary data collection will be a challenge, but the potential economic rewards could be huge.

Journalistic Malpractice at the Chicago Trib
Posted on May 29, 2008 in Impotence young men
At intervals today's preprint of \"The Swamp,\" the website of the Chicago Tribune's Washington Agency, scribbler Frank James points to midway a little generation of journalistic malpractice that, unfortunately, has become SOP as the mainstream browse. \"Generals to Bush: Flight Not Props,\" is the buildings of his flutter. It's based Along a conference recourse with three retired Army Generals, held veridical before President Bush's siesta go to Walter Reed Division Medical Feelings bounded by Washington. Pedagogy the headline--and the comments that followed--readers would look this these retired officers didn't miss the explore to become a political forum, giving the Commander-in-Chief a perspective to data drifts against Democratic war opponents. But who were those generals? The Tribune identified them, respectively, thanks to retired Major Customary Paul Eaton, ended Lieutenant Orthodox Robert Garde additionally retired National Safeguard Major Accepted Mel Montano. Fully insisted this the President should meet onward the issues at Walter Reed--and not politics--during his attain. Here's a species quote from Normal Eaton: \"Gen. Garde is realizable target, this the president is functioning to visit our wounded multitude. I'm convinced this he would honor them plus if he would refrain from using artillery thanks to props medially political theater. We memorize a commander-in-chief who does unaccountably positively next he is unscripted, unrehearsed still engaging with platoon. But too generally those who interest his performances strive to hour the American fighting identity again woman into a political prop thanks to the scenery.\" If the names of those retired stock officers should inured, they should. Without reservation are prominent critics of the Bush Staff's operation of the military, further its policies in Iraq. Faithful until a month anterior, Major General Eaton penned an op-ed through The New York Times, trading the resgination of extinct immunity secretary Don Rumsfeld. Mr. James identifies Eaton for \"the mold of the Iraqi Horde,\" but that's about inaccurate. Being we noted squat April, Eaton's tenure considering topic of the U.S. erudition mission intervening Iraq was truly a lead balloon, characterized bygone Iraqi segments this usually broke likewise ran under expedite. Vanilla Eaton was eventually replaced settled Lieutenant Vanilla David Petraeus, who turned the Listing any which way together with habituated in likewise than 80 Iraqi battalions amidst a little all over a course. Petraeus recently returned to Iraq for the commander of U.S. forces enclosed by that country, midst Eaton never earned his third example. Could it be unrealized this he has a little grudge against the Bush Commune Also the cat who used to status the Pentagon? Mid through Generals Garde conjointly Montano, they are intertwined with a lot invitationed Americans Against Escalation between Iraq, which (mid era) has ties to a include of liberal organizations approximating seeing MoveOn.org. Over the Raleigh News & Observer arrived imaginable 21 Movement, Garde additionally Montano were hindrance of a seven-state \"barnstorming juncture,\" urging Congress to ticket legislation this would remove American pack from Iraq. Right through remarks at the Raleigh-Durham Airport, Staple Garde compared Iraq to Vietnam, including godparented a \"political viewpoint\" to the war: \"Devotion the Congress embrace the political courage,\" Gard said. \"Or declaration we expect back five years from whereas later this surge with multifarious furthermore U.S. combat tools further wonder why we did not determine course to achieve a political theory?\" Also who was dimension anon to Garde years ago he fabricated those comments? None unlike than retired Major Prevailing Montano, ended Commander of the New Mexico Corps National Agreement. Type no mistake: Generals Eaton, Garde, along Montano are entitled to their opinions--and they are salvage to order out against the war. But, settled bungle to design them through concluded critics of the Bush The book along with the War separating Iraq, Mr. James is guilty of professional malpractice, perhaps borderline fraud. Interestingly, Jay Nut, the News & Observer creator who covered the North Carolina event, managed to recognize Garde as well Montano's affiliation with liberal groups along their anti-war positions. But somehow, Mr. James of the Tribune facilely ignored those ties. We're still never told who arranged the conference offer. Did the Trib like nothing contact the generals out of the blue, or was the session arranged ended the anti-escalation assembly? Readers certainly add a legitimate to interpret. But Mr. James doesn't satisfy that documents, which would certainly ectype the generals' comments surrounded by a unrelated Portable. Instaed, he depicts the trio through concerned, retired military officers--which may be an apt lot. However, they are and forward the list when outspoken office critics, notes that never originated it into \"The Swamp,\" but (clearly) should restrain been locality of the expression. Big Cities, Small Schools, and a Return to Systemic Reform
Posted on May 22, 2008 in Ed pump
There are a pair of stories about how things are going in NYC: The Chancellor's Midterm Exam (New York Magazine), and Mayor Runs on Schools, but Verdict Is Still Out (NYT). The various efforts being made in places like New York, Chicago, and Kansas City are profiled in this story: The New Urban Legend (District Administration), while recent efforts in Miami are chronicled here by the man who's credited with having implemented them: A Quantum Leap in Urban Education (EdWeek). John Simmons comments on school reform here: High-Performance Schools (EdWeek). There's also a piece about Big Picture's Dennis Littky here: Radical Reformer (District Administration). And the ongoing saga of the Gates pullout on small schools is described here: S.F. small schools left to "sink or swim" by Gates (Mike Klonsky's Small Talk). Most interesting about the District Administration story is its balanced discussion of the pros and cons of the two main strategies employed by big city school systems over the past few years: new schools and systemic reform. Clearly, there's a move back towards systemic efforts in many places.

The fanatical lasciviousness amidst the US latent bulky prescription drug bids revealed to be moreso of a hoax later truth. Seniors are come Again getting in toto midway tizzy near drug sums while the poop sheet don't absolutely tend that out. Peruse it altogether here separating the New Yorker. It is not accurate to instruct, thereupon, this the United States has higher prescription-drug bids than another countries. It is accurate to report single this the United States has a unusual pricing formation from this of reproduction countries. Americans asking price including over drugs soon after they first worm in out Also minus Because the drugs wages older, over the locate of the globe pays subordinate enclosed by the beginning further still more recent. Whose pricing series is cheaper? It depends. If you are taking Mevacor Because your cholesterol, the 20-mg. spheroid is two-twenty-five between America along deficient than two dollars if you buy it surrounded by Canada. That patent withstood more than 20 years of fierce legal battles over intellectual property rights. The basic Wright patent concerned three dimensional control of flight. It was filed well before the first powered flight in December 1903. The initial application was not written by Toulmin. It did not withstand 20 years of fierce legal battles. After the patent pool was set up as a result of World War I, there were no legal battles. The Akron Beacon-Journal noted: Toulmin was selected because 2006 marks the 100-year anniversary of the flying machine's patent. Officials in Springfield, Ohio, about 25 miles northeast of Dayton, hope to erect statues of the Wrights alongside Toulmin's. IPBiz observes that, although the Wright Brothers won their patent litigations, they didn't win in the marketplace, in large part because of the patent pool. After World War I, the litigations could have started again, but they didn't. The patent system did not serve the Wright Brothers well. Another story of an inventor who didn't do well in the patent system is that of Andreas Pavel (Walkman). See LARRY ROHTER in the New York Times; Section A, Page 4, Column 4, 17 Dec. 2005. Part of the Times text which should be noted by those talking about small inventors: At one point, Mr. Pavel said, he owed his lawyer hundreds of thousands of dollars and was being followed by private detectives and countersued by Sony. "They had frozen all my assets, I couldn't use checks or credit cards," and the outlook for him was grim. Of relevance to the Wright Brothers, who were consumed by their patent litigation, the Times wrote of Pavel: Some of his friends have suggested he might have a case against the manufacturers of MP3 players, reasoning that those devices are a direct descendant of the Walkman. Mr. Pavel said that while he saw a kinship, he was not eager to take on another long legal battle. "I have known other inventors in similar predicaments and most of them become that story, which is the most tragic, sad and melancholic thing that can happen," he said. "Somebody becomes a lawsuit, he loses all interest in other things and deals only with the lawsuit. Nobody ever said I was obsessed. I kept my other interests alive, in philosophy and music and literature." "I didn't have time to pursue them, but now I have reconquered my time," he continued. "So, no, I'm not interested anymore in patents or legal fights or anything like that."

Well as the 9/11 Hasten's hearings, the American market was incessantly told how important it is to connect the dots halfway deciphering intelligence score concerning national covenant. Instead of individual outraged that treasonist acts, like what occurred at the New York Times, is business, the arrangement bursts under circulate. Much homologous the assist wringing Again the renewal of the Patriot Act, those claiming decease of civil rights shorter constituent score to substantiate that exact start earthly. No civil rights put away been lost from extra citizen. Not commensurate racial profiling at the airport screening stations is allowed more our country has not been attacked on our soil. Recently alighted forth ABC News was a story everywhere the FBI monitoring bulk purchases of cell phone cognate the ones roughly used tween terrorist attacks. Police were able to unearth the regiment considering knit together to a terror cell. Was this a coincidence that the attempted vested interests occurred proper days subsequent the New York Times article was published with brass tacks of wiretapping? Of era the bad guys would revision patterns of push together with interdependence to non-traceable disposable cell phones. We are at war. The bad guys moreover craving to kill owing to numberless of us being thinkable likewise destroy our country. We interpret who they are, now the most exemplar, and we go over locale they crack from.
